Evenhand
Overview
Evenhand is an app that employs micro learning to reinforce gender equality in the workplace.
Organizations subscribe to a company plan that grants their employees access to the mobile app. The employees then sign in and complete a survey to determine which video courses they should complete to meet the standards of the company.
Role
UI/UX Designer
Prototyping, Visual design, Interaction design
February 2022 - April 2024
Background
After completing courses in UI/UX design through Get Coding, I was connected to the founders of Evenhand to design an MVP for their mobile app, alongside two other software development students from Get Coding.
Working with other students from Get Coding offered a great opportunity to gain experience in a collaborative team setting. I handled the UI/UX design while my teammates focused on software development, simulating a real-world product team dynamic.
I contributed to this project in the following ways:
This was my first real world experience in UI/UX design.
Served as the primary point of contact between the founders and the development team. As a designer with experience in software development, I facilitated communication between the founders and the development team to ensure the desired features are feasible in the given time frame. I pitched the designs to the founders and ensured that my prototypes matched their vision before handing them over to the development team to be built.
Created the company’s branding. Through discovery meetings with the founders, I was able to determine the desired look and feel of the app, and deliver a visual style that aligned with their vision.
Visual Design
After gaining a solid understanding of the product and the founders’ goals, I was able to begin designing the user flow, setup pages, video courses and more.
Landing Page
The landing page is a simple sign up page that establishes the app’s look and feel. The app is focused on gender equality, so the colours and design were intended to avoid targeting any specific gender.
User Setup Page
During the sign up process, the users complete a survey to determine the most important areas to focus on throughout their journey. The user then ranks the chosen topics by priority.
Video Lesson Interface
After completing the intake survey, the user is presented with short videos at set intervals to introduce micro learning into their daily life. Users are able to watch the informational videos, as well as learn more about the featured presenter. All videos are later available to re-watch in the user’s library page.
Results and Takeaways
As this was my first experience designing in a team setting, this project allowed me to gain a lot of valuable insights into the basics of design.
Some key takeaways from this project are:
Teamwork is vital to design work. Nothing should be designed in a vacuum. Working closely with other members of your team will provide you with diverse viewpoints and alternative solutions to the issues at hand. Having a close relationship with the developers on the team will also ensure that your designs are within the scope of the project and the team’s capabilities.
Pitching your prototypes frequently aids in the design process. Checking in with the clients and the rest of the team keeps your design work on course with the vision of the project, and gives everyone an opportunity to raise concerns before an excessive amount of time is committed to a solution.
